You look at your bank account. You look at your investment account. But do you look at your career?
Because your career has a direct influence over your wealth and quality of life. And it’s on your job is to maximise whatever is important for you.
However, looking back at the layoffs of the last years, we can all agree that no job is safe, and one of the most important career metric and question you should ask yourself is:
“If you lose your job right now, how confident are you will be able to get a new role immediately?”
To score higher on this metric, you need to be in the following situation:
have an established personal brand
have an established proof of expertise
have a network of recruiters you can rely on for finding a role
being very good at interviewing: both soft skills and tech skills
having a clear LinkedIn profile and CV, which clearly shows who you are and what you did in the past
So, as you can see above, the tech skills play only a part of what you need to be able to land a new role as soon as possible.
Now that you know the question, let’s see the underlying career metrics you should be tracking:
In the last 12 months, how many interviews did you have?
What % of the interviews you passed and got to offer phase?
How many roles do you currently receive (via email, LinkedIn), per week?
Are you still learning new things at your current role? If not, how long ago did you stop learning?
How terrified are you of losing your job and not finding a new one?
How afraid of changing your job are you because of fear of landing in a worse place?
Looking back at your work 1-2 years ago, can you now think of situations where you could’ve taken better decisions?
What big bold bet did you do in the past 3 years?
If you now see your dream job advertised, how confident are you that you can get hired?
Create a spreadsheet, copy these metrics, and track them year by year. Some of them are easy to fill in (eg: how many interviews you had), but others require more introspection (eg: when you could’ve taken better decisions).
And again, as you can see, only 1 or 2 metrics from above are strictly related to the technical skills.
