Many years ago I worked for a traditional corporation. Things were going great, I was one of the high performers in the team, and everyone was happy with my performance.
One day, I needed to be at home to wait for a plumber. I had no idea the exact time he was going to come, so I needed to be at home all day.
So I asked my director for a day of remote-work. I got a blunt refusal:
“I’d have no issue with a remote work day, but if I let you work remotely, others will want one too. And I’m concerned others will slack off.”
And that was a powerful lesson for me: My performance was higher than other’s, but somehow that didn’t translate in any extra flexibility or benefit for me.
And who was to blame for this? The director? The company culture?
No! I was to blame for this. Because I should’ve gone to a place where high performance was properly rewarded.
And ever since that, I did.
And you should too, if you find yourself in similar situations.
Because life is short. Next thing you know 2-5-10 years pass by. And it’s your duty to get into a company that values you and motivates you to do your best work.
That’s why it’s so important you take your career in your own hands and improve whatever is important for you.
And speaking of that, I launched a Udemy course, which provides ambitious software engineers with the information they need to earn more, improve their quality of life and be perceived as a top of the market engineer.
While there are many courses that teach you technologies, frameworks, programming languages, there are no other courses that help you develop the other skills you need to truly succed as a software engineer.
